Then they that feared the Lord spake often one to another: and the Lord hearkened, and heard it, and a BOOK OF REMEMBRANCE was written before him for them that feared the Lord, and that thought upon his name.
And they shall be mine, saith the Lord of hosts, IN THAT DAY THAT I MAKE UP MY JEWELS; and I WILL SPARE THEM, as a man spareth his own son that serveth him.
Then shall ye return, and discern between the righteous and the wicked, between him that serveth God and him that serveth him not.
For, behold, THE DAY COMETH, that shall burn as an oven; and all the proud, yea, and all that do wickedly, shall be stubble: and the day that cometh shall burn them up, saith the Lord of hosts…
The Contrast Between God’s Jewels and the Wicked
There are a lot of places in the Bible where God contrasts the righteous with the wicked, good with evil, the people of God with the people of the world. This is one of those places.
The contrast between these two types of people is so significant that God keeps a special Book in Heaven called the “Book of Remembrance”. This is different than the Book of Life, where the names of those covered by the blood of Jesus are written down.
The Book of Remembrance
God writes down the names of His Jewels* (KJV and NKJV) in His Book of Remembrance. The ESV calls them God’s ‘treasured possession” and this is a list of those who will be spared on that DAY. What Day? The DAY when God shall destroy and burn up the wicked. This is a reference to the Rapture and the criteria for being considered worthy to escape.**
God’s criteria for His Jewels:
- They fear God (the beginning of wisdom)
- They speak (commune & teach) often to one another
- They think on His name (meditate & reckon). This Hebrew word is chashab, and leans towards the idea of figuring out, understanding and learning about God and His ways…getting to KNOW Him. ***
- They are righteous.
- They serve God.
- They are not proud; they do not do wickedly
Will you be spared on that day when God makes up His Jewels?
The day is coming when God will remove His treasured possession from the earth in order to judge and punish the wicked. You can either have your sin judged now and have it forgiven by God or you will have to reckon with it later as you attempt to live through harrowing events of great destruction. There is no way to know when that Day will happen, but it is foolish to put off something of so much importance. Where are you going to spend eternity? It depends on if God considers you to be His treasured possession or one of the wicked. There is no middle ground.
